Portraiture as
a lasting artwork
Painterly, narrative portraits at Huzzard Studios, Perth. Inspired by Pre-Raphaelite painters and Old Master light. Images made to be framed.
Where photography
meets painting
Oak & Grey fine art portraits are conceived as single artworks — not documents of an occasion, but images with genuine narrative weight. Each session is informed by the visual language of the Pre-Raphaelites and the lighting of Rembrandt and Caravaggio.
We work at Huzzard Studios in Perth, a space with the character and flexibility to support the kind of considered, unhurried photography this work requires. Backdrops, drapery, props, and lighting are all part of the collaboration.
The result is an image — or a small body of images — that you will return to for decades. Something worth printing large and hanging with care.
The painters we carry
into every session
Narrative & Mood
John William Waterhouse's figures are caught mid-thought — inhabiting their own internal worlds. That quality of psychological presence shapes how we direct and frame our subjects.
Light & Shadow
The contrast between illumination and darkness in Rembrandt's portraiture creates depth that flat lighting never achieves. We study his use of a single light source and bring it directly into our studio work.
Colour & Fabric
Dante Gabriel Rossetti's attention to the texture and drape of fabric, the saturation of colour, and the arrangement of hair and flowers is a constant reference for our wardrobe and prop decisions.
What a fine art session
involves
Fine art sessions at Oak & Grey begin weeks before we shoot. A detailed brief is developed collaboratively — your wardrobe, the colour palette, reference images, and the narrative intention of the portrait.
On the day, we work at Huzzard Studios in Perth with a full creative setup — backdrops, drapery, multiple lighting configurations, and props. Sessions run for up to four hours.
Post-production is extensive: Photoshop-based retouching guided by painterly reference, with texture and tonal work to give finished images a depth that sits somewhere between photography and oil painting.
Final delivery is a private gallery of selects. Large-format fine art printing is available and strongly recommended — these images are made to be printed.
Enquire About Fine Art
"I have never seen myself look like that. It does not feel like a photograph — it feels like a painting of someone worth painting."
